Week 5 Power Rankings

1) New Orleans Saints: Both sides of the ball know how to counterbalance each other in order to capture a big win.
2) Indianapolis Colts: The Colts always start off like this, but only finished once like this in 2007.
3) Minnesota Vikings: Favre continues to make his mark especially when ADP was held to less than 60 yards.
4) New York Giants: Manning may be a little banged up, but they have the Raiders coming to town and he can possibly rest the entire second half.
5) Baltimore Ravens: Ravens are still on a path to the playoffs and will meet the Pats again. If they can find a wide receiver they may have one of the most complete teams within the league.
6) New York Jets: Sanchez showed signs he is human, but the Jets defense showed they can control a high powered offense in back to back weeks.
7) Atlanta Falcons: Following a bye week the wheels of the “Burner” Turner should be churning to push them to a win against a new look 49ers team.
8) New England Patriots: The defense is still ailing, but Brady has the offense gaining steam going into the grunt of the schedule.
9) Denver Broncos: Broncos are still flying under the radar following their down to the wire victory. Marshall’s skills may come into handy in the later stretch of the season once they go through their brutal schedule.
10) Philadelphia Eagles: D-Mc is back and possibly a healthy Westbrook, and a reinstated Michael Vick; can we see what this offense was really supposed to run like?
11) Cincinnati Bengals: Will Chad really be able to do the Ricky Bobby against this Ravens defense.
12) San Francisco 49ers: Crabtree is now has a contract and a jersey, Singletary has the team playing with a swagger, and they have the Dirty Birds coming to town.
13) Green Bay Packers: Very tough emotional loss to Favre and the Vikings, the safeties need to protect the middle of the field.
14) Chicago Bears: Cutler hasn’t looked back to his poor week one performance as he is developing a passing game with a bunch of mediocre receivers.
15) Pittsburgh Steelers: Tomlin and Co. has the team moving in the right direction once again. Mendenhall had a lot to say and also backed it up with over 150 yards on the ground.
16) Jacksonville Jaguars: David Garrard showed signs of him being a quarterback as he was great off of the play action and
17) San Diego Chargers: LT is back but the where did this rock solid defense go? I guess they are the ones that are lights out.
18) Arizona Cardinals: Warner, Boldin, and Fitz should have discussed their problems over the bye week and will now be able to get back to their high octane offense.
19) Dallas Cowboys: Romo has to develop decision making skills if he or the Cowboys will ever succeed in this league. Throwing to Champ Bailey’s side of the field twice within the final seconds of play is not a start.
20) Houston Texans: The Texans offense has to be the deciding factor as their defense has not shown up to any game this season.
21) Miami Dolphins: Chad Henne showed he can be the interim arm for the team, but a true test waits against a Jets defense to see if he can be the new face of the franchise.
22) Tennessee Titans: Can the Titans really bounce back? The offense can’t put up points and the defense seems to not have the fire and desire of yesteryear.
23) Seattle Seahawks: Hasselback may be in the line up once again, but the swagger filled Jags are coming to town.
24) Washington Redskins: Jason Campbell may have gotten a talk from the head man as both want to maintain their jobs.
25) Buffalo Bills: With Cleveland coming to town the Bills can bounce back and hopefully show that talent which was visible the first week against the Patriots.
26) Carolina Panthers: Hopefully the bye week has served the Panthers well as they have much improvement to do on the offensive and defensive side.
27) Detroit Lions: Stafford’s injury may be a minor setback, but then again what is a setback to a team that has won one game within the past year.
28) Oakland Raiders: McFadden has the tools to be successful within this league; however Russell’s play puts 8 in the box on short yardage situations.
29) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Running game cannot be all that pushes this Bucs team, one quarterback from the stable must step up.
30) Kansas City Chiefs: Continue to stumble in a division in which have many problems.
31) Cleveland Browns: Browns have been in a rebuilding state since their expansion season in 1999
32) St. Lois Rams: Stephen Jackson is the only bright spot on the Rams’ roster as they continue to pummel.

Week 4 Power Rankings

1) New Orleans Saints: People think Brees makes this team roll but Thomas and Bush rushing performance says he has a big place in the offense as well.
2) Baltimore Ravens: Both sides of the ball are solid. FOR ONCE.
3) New York Giants: With a few cupcake games coming up the Giants will be able to play their injured less and less.
4) Indianapolis Colts: Peyton Manning continues to be a true field general ripping defenses.
5) New York Jets: Mark Dirty Sanchez is playing like a season veteran behind his solid defense as he does just enough to continue winning.
6) Minnesota Vikings: Classic Brett Farve lifted the team to a 3-0 start; Childress knew exactly what he was doing when he begged for a comeback.
7) Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan will take on his Prototype this Sunday.
8) New England Patriots: The defense has to find a common ground in the linebacking corps as Brady is developing his rhythm.
9) Philadelphia Eagles: The off week will assist D-Mc in recovering as well as Michael Vick to get further involved in game plans.
10) San Diego Chargers: LT possibly returning and Rivers playing with a strong current will drive this team in Pittsburgh.
11) Denver Broncos: The most under the radar team at 3-0 and leading the AFC West.
12) Cincinnati Bengals: Palmer and Ocho are still proving their talents.
13) San Francisco 49ers: A charity game against the Rams will assist the 49ers without their leading rusher.
14) Green Bay Packers: Monday Night shall be interesting as an undefeated team lead by a Packers legend enters historic Lambeau.
15) Chicago Bears: Cutler is finding his targets with ease and Briggs is picking up the slack from missing their other Pro Bowl backer.
16) Pittsburgh Steelers: The Champs are steadily falling each week the rushing game really needs to return.
17) Tennessee Titans: The young group of wide receivers must step up to assist their aging quarterback.
18) Dallas Cowboys: Got a win in the new stadium can they prevail this week against an undefeated Broncos team
19) Arizona Cardinals: The Cards are heading south for the winter early, but I don’t think we can mark them off yet as the offense has too much talent.
20) Jacksonville Jaguars: MJD may have had a season break out game, but will this team continue to build off of the momentum or halt.
21) Houston Texans: No one knows what team will show up for game the game as their inconsistent defense is continuing to hold them down.
22) Miami Dolphins: Pennington out for the season has the Phins searching for answers. Will a duo of Chad Henne and Pat White have the Phins doing tricks again?
23) Seattle Seahawks: Is a kicker really holding this team down or is it possible they don’t have any consistency?
24) Buffalo Bills: “I DON’T KNOW SIR!” is all I can say
25) Carolina Panthers: Panthers will have to figure something out during the off week in order to play with their talent. Possibly not having Jake Delhomie as the starting QB.
26) Washington Redskins: All of the big name stars have ailing injuries and Jason Campbell will continue to be the topic of discussion.
27) Oakland Raiders: D-Russell is not showing he can become a franchise quarterback, should they have let Garcia go?
28) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Let’s see if this quarterback switch will give new life to the Bucs as they need to score because the defense can’t hold water.
29) Kansas City Chiefs: Offensive woes continue for Cassel as LJ can’t push the marker to get new downs.
30) Cleveland Browns: Possibly this season’s Detroit Lions as Mangini seems to be ruining the team already with his indecisiveness.
31) Detroit Lions: Signs already are looking brighter as they marked one in the win column.
32) St. Lois Rams: With no receivers and a Swiss cheese defense the rushing game is thee only bright spot for this team.

Week 3 Power Rankings

1) New Orleans Saints: The defense has gives the offense a complementary punch, allowing the team as a whole to rise to the top.
2) New York Giants: Clutch plays from the possible new # 1 receiver Mario Manningham assisted the “G-Men” to comeback in the Big D.
3) Baltimore Ravens: Flacco and Rice provide great balance on the offensive end while Ray Lewis continues to age like a fine wine.
4) Indianapolis Colts: The thing that places this team apart from many is hmmm……… Peyton Manning.
5) Minnesota Vikings: Brett Favre is giving just enough leverage for Minnesota to continue to climb in the win column.
6) New York Jets: Talk is Cheap, well not for the J-E-T-S……. JETS as they shut down the high powered offense of the Patriots and proved they shall be the top in the division.
7) Atlanta Falcons: If the AFC wasn’t so top heavy the Falcons would be higher on the chart as they present one of the most balanced team in the NFC.
8) Pittsburgh Steelers: Last year’s champs need to find a running game fast or the clock control will hinder their defense without their Pro Bowl safety.
9) New England Patriots: Moss is no doubt one of the best receivers within the game, however when he talks it and doesn’t prove it we see what the outcome will be. Can you
10) Philadelphia Eagles: Andy Reid now has many quarterbacks in the stable; the problem is he’s starting the one with the least experience. D’Mc must gain strength to make the Eagles soar.
11) San Diego Chargers: Should definitely be placed higher in the rankings, but bad play calls within the final minutes along with a laundry list of day-to-day players caused them to slip.
12) Tennessee Titans: Chris Johnson displayed his grill as he shined through the Texans defense; however we need to see a stronger defense. I’m sure the longest tenure coach in Jeff Fisher will make key adjustments.
13) San Francisco 49ers: Is this even the same team from last year? This shows the difference a strong coach can make in the locker room as Vernon Davis is now a team captain.
14) Green Bay Packers: Rodgers to Jennings can only get the Packers so far Ryan Grant must establish himself this season to give more punch to the offense.
15) Chicago Bears: Cutler lead the team in upsetting the number one ranked Steelers, he showed his arm can pay the Bears dividend if looks to Forte in the flat.
16) Dallas Cowboys: “Jerry’s Playground” opened with a bang but the Boys couldn’t put the fire out. Romo still isn’t showing he can be an Aikman or Starbauch.
17) Arizona Cardinals: The Cards bounced back from an embarrassing performance in week one and Kurt Warner is showing his accuracy in that high powered offense.
18) Seattle Seahawks: Hasselback is injured ONCE AGAIN and putting the Seahawks in between a rock and a hard place.
19) Miami Dolphins: The Wildcat made its mark last season with Ronnie Brown darting through the defense, but the Phins can’t forget about the passing game as they have a good TE as a security blanket.
20) Houston Texans: Finally played up to the hype which will make the AFC South an intriguing race down the stretch of the season.
21) Buffalo Bills: The Bills may have played great in the first two weeks of the season as TO is beginning to show his worth, but this week will be the true test to see if they move up in rank.
22) Cincinnati Bengals: Maybe this is the season where Chad and Carson become a household name once again following three seasons of mediocre play.
23) Washington Redskins: Clinton Portis needs to bring one of his many personas to the field to put the Skins on the right track in the hard NFC East.
24) Denver Broncos: McDaniels must have known his team’s strengths prior to the season because all questioned the big Cutler trade.
25) Oakland Raiders: Do we remember the quote from last week? “Although they lost a close game they showed improvement and promise (Thus far).” Thus far was right as Russell is still struggling to consistently hit targets.
26) Jacksonville Jaguars: MJD needs to have a compliment back he cannot do it alone with a shaky passing game.
27) Carolina Panthers: With one of the best rushing duos returning from last season and an elusive Steve Smith how do they continue to struggle? Maybe because they don’t take advantage of either.
28) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: What happened to the offense we saw in week one? The Tampa 2 has also died.
29) Kansas City Chiefs: Cassel showed he can still play in this league as a starter, but without weapons from last year he will still struggle.
30) Cleveland Browns: Maybe the Browns shouldn’t go to the locker room and just do like middle school teams and meet under the goal post to maintain momentum and poise.
31) Detroit Lions: The Lions are finding and building off of some of the components which will make them successful, but they are still far from King of the Jungle.
32) St. Lois Rams: Let’s just look forward to April!

Week 2 NFL Power Rankings

1) Pittsburgh Steelers: Although the Men of Steel are rusty at rushing the ball, until the reigning champs lose their touch they are still sitting #1.
2) New England Patriots: Brady’s return proved he is still one of the best within the league; Mayo may be out for a few weeks which could truly affect the rush defense.
3) New York Giants: It is apparent the Giants front lines on both sides of the ball are the strengths, and the offense seems to be working thus far without a true #1 receiver.
4) Philadelphia Eagles: After the Panthers had an order of McNabb spare ribs the offense has question marks, but the defense performed like it is one of the top in the league.
5) San Diego Chargers: Has injuries to some key players following the rally in Oakland. Hopefully LT and center Nick Hardwick can recover quickly.
6) Minnesota Vikings: Adrian Peterson displayed how he is the top running back in the league, while Percy Harvin showed off his versatility.
7) Indianapolis Colts: Jim Caldwell received his first win as the defense saved the offense in week one due to a weak rushing attack. Anthony Gonzalez’s injury could hamper the offense for the next 8 weeks.
8) Atlanta Falcons: Without a rushing attack Matt Ryan seems to be ignoring a sophomore slump as by getting connected with Tony Gonzalez.
9) Tennessee Titans: Not capitalizing on field position and turnover opportunities cost them to potentially upset the last year’s champs, but young receivers showed a lot of promise.
10) New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees continues his assault through the air in ’09 with six touchdowns, granted it was against the Lions. The defense also showed signs of improvement, but once again granted it was against the Lions.
11) Baltimore Ravens: Flacco and Co. showed a lot of diversification within their offensive scheme, while the defense still holds its tradition without Rex.
12) Green Bay Packers: The defense showed major improvements with the new scheme and pieces in place.
13) New York Jets: Rex Ryan’s demeanor has rubbed off on the Jets defense as they are taking no prisoners, and Mark Sanchez shows his worth for moving up to the number five pick.
14) Seattle Seahawks: Hasselback finally has a top target as the offense was moving on all cylinders in their new offensive set.
15) Dallas Cowboys: Roy Williams held down the Lions as a number one receiver for years and it seems when placed in the spotlight in the “Big D” he can produce.
16) Arizona Cardinals: The offense is struggling because of the loss of their coordinator, but the injuries to their second and third receivers will not help matters.
17) San Francisco 49ers: Singletary’s leadership tactics assist this team in gaining identity as well as a strong defensive backbone.
18) Chicago Bears: If Jay Cutler continues making mistakes his house may the next vandalized, (McKelvin, Buffalo). The injury to Brian Urlacher may also cause some problems within the defense.
19) Miami Dolphins: Parcells may have lifted the Dolphins to new heights , but the first week loss shows there is still some work to be done
20) Buffalo Bills: The team came out firing with underneath passes out of the no huddle, but the offense did not manage the clock enough to keep the defense rested and off the field.
21) Carolina Panthers: Jake Delhomie began the season right where he left off by continually turning the ball over.
22) Washington Redskins: Jason Campbell continues to struggle as the Redskin offense could not move the ball consistently in the most watched season opener in history.
23) Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jags defense was the biggest question mark this off season, but they held one of the most potent offenses to 14 points. The offense must create some big plays with what little receivers they have.
24) Houston Texans: With so many high hopes the Texans choked in week one, maybe they should show Dunta Robinson the $ like his shows displayed.
25) Denver Broncos: The Immaculate Deflection gave the Broncos the lead in the final ticks, but the offense still looked suspect and the defense gave up a lot of long passes.
26) Oakland Raiders: Russell found a new target in rookie Louis Murphy and also continues to use his security blanket in the big tight end Miller. Although they lost a close game they showed improvement and promise (Thus far).
27) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The offense put up large numbers with a new Cadillac in the back field; however what use to be their strong point in defense fell with Williams and Crayton posting large numbers.
28) Cincinnati Bengals: Almost doesn’t count as the team lost a close battle against the Broncos.
29) Cleveland Browns: The Browns nation met the new and improved Browns in the first half and the new and improved Browns met the old Browns in the locker room.
30) Kansas City Chiefs: The offense held its grown against one of the leagues traditional powerful defenses, but the defense did not play up to their level.
31) Detroit Lions: Any improvement from last season will look good, although Stafford did have such a pleasant day with a number of picks. He must continue to find hmmm #81 maybe!
32) St. Lois Rams: Stephen Jackson will struggle this season just as Mark Bulger because the passing attack is obsolete.

Stage Fright

Saturday paired traditional high powered programs, one from the easy going midwest and one from the fast paced southwest. Ohio State and Southern Cal entered the game ranked in the top ten and anticipating another BCS birth possibly one for the National Championship.

It was a must win game for the Buckeyes as they have been 0-7 against top five teams over the past few seasons. They not only represented the Buckeye nation, but also the other ten conference schools. The BIG TEN conference has been a complete joke over the past few seasons and Saturday's out of conference defeats did not help the conference return to prominence.
The Buckeyes may have controlled majority of the game and only lost by three points, but their ranking and perception has shifted them from a consistent top 10 Power House to a lower teens unstable program.

The major difference within this weekends match up was of course the COACHING! We all know Sentor Trussel as a conservative coach, well his conventional methods caused his team the game. With both teams being fairly equal in ability the intangible of the game was the coaching and Pete Carroll definitely won that battle which resulted in his team winning the war.

In a big game situation which Trussel had home field advantage and momentum, he was entirely too conservative. Instead of going for it on 4th and goal on the 3 yard line which would give his team a touchdown advantage he decided to settle and kick a field goal. On the other hand, Carroll on the first possession went for it on 4th and goal which paid dividend givng them an early lead. Carroll and the Trojans were gutsy as they were 3-4 in fourth down conversions, which were at key moments within the game.

The Buckeyes had many chances to increase the lead and put distance between the Trojans, but did not capitalize and call proper plays which would place them in managable situations. For instance, you can look at the film and tell me what second half alterations were made by both teams and which paid dividend in the end. Trussel did not take advantage of certain situations on offense nor make necessary adjustments to stop Joe McKnight within the second half.
Was I the only spectator which saw the slot lined up wide with a safety 12 yards back? Would a quick screen or bubble pass been too much to draw up on the dry erase board? Or did anyone else realize BOOM Herron got BANGED up? I didn't know a 2.4 average on 18 carries was a success.

The OSU defense played its heart out and held USC to basically 7 points if you take away that fluke interception return which resulted in a 2yrd run. Trussel relied too much on the defense to continue to hold the USC high powered offense. Regardless if a freshman quarterback was leading the charge they still have numerous athletes at each skilled position.
Where to go from here should be the question in each OSU coach, player, and fan as the loss put a large dent in the program which could cost a BCS birth and high level prospects to look towards other top tier programs for their collegiate career.

The loss also effected the perception of the Big Ten on a national level as many now view the conference with the Big East and ACC as one of the weaker BCS conferences. Even if the Buckeyes do rally and finish the season without another loss the damage has been done which will take many out of conference top 5 victories to repair.

Oregon Ducks: Too Harsh in Smoking Blount!

Oregon not only lost the battle of their opening game against Boise State, but they also lost a general, in standout senior running back LeGarrette Blount.

Following a disappointing performance against Boise State in which the Duck's suffered a 19-8 defeat, Blount was walking off the field decided to sucker punch BSU player Byron Hout. Prior to the right straight to Hout's jaw, Hout ran over to Blount antagonizing and instigating confrontation by yelling in Blount's face and tapping him on the shoulder pad.

Once the skirmish was broken up by Boise coaches and Oregon players Blount was escorted off the field, but a sports fight would not be a fight until the fans were involved. Blount showed signs of Ron "Ron Ron" Artest from the 2004 Pacers versus Pistions, as he answered the Boise fans rants with hostile attitude attempting to enter the stands.

Oregon announced Friday,15 hours following the end of the game, that Blount will be suspended for the remainder of the 2009 season for his post-game altercation. Oregon took action on the incident before the Pac-10 Conference and the NCAA could take further, possibly much harsher action on the program. His single moment of stupidity may cost the Duck's their season and him an NFL career.

The Duck's will now have to rely on freshman running back LaMichael James and Keyon Barner to take the majority of the carries in Blount's absence. Within the season opener James had only two carries for 22 yards. Barner, a freshman, is listed on the roster as a corner; however under the recent circumstance coach Kelly has moved Barner to the offensive side in hopes of gaining another athletic back.

Blount, 6'2, 240 pound junior college transfer rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored a school record 17 touchdowns while splitting carries with Jeremiah Johnson and serving a 3 game suspension.

The question is was the indefinite season suspension of Blount not enough, too much or just right? Oregon took action on the situation prior to conference and NCAA regulation occurred, which was great in the public relations department, but was the punishment too excessive?

Blount was antagonized by an opposing player, one in which is not suffering similar punishment. It is understandable a punishment should have been served to Blount, however the suspension was quickly issued and extremely severe. Oregon should have taken action stating an indefinite suspension which would not set forth a certain amount of games.

Yes Blount should be accountable for his actions and punished to an extent, however the WAC and NCAA should have also taken action on Byron Hout since BSU has failed to issue an acceptable punishment. Blount's collegiate career is now over because of the instigation of Hout.

Friday Blount did issue an apology for his actions, but it was 15 hours too late as the damage to the school, athletic department, the team, and himself was already done. The damage which has caused Blount to fall from an early second round selection to possibly a UFL character case.
