If they can find a wide receiver they may have one of the most complete teams within the league.
6) New York Jets: Sanchez showed signs he is human, but the Jets defense showed they can control a high powered offense in back to back weeks.
7) Atlanta Falcons: Following a bye week the wheels of the “Burner” Turner should be churning to push them to a win against a new look 49ers team.
8) New England Patriots: The defense is still ailing, but Brady has the offense gaining steam going into the grunt of the schedule.
9) Denver Broncos: Broncos are still flying under the radar following their down to the wire victory. Marshall’s skills may come into handy in the later stretch of the season once they go through their brutal schedule.
10) Philadelphia Eagles: D-Mc is back and possibly a healthy Westbrook, and a reinstated Michael Vick; can we see what this offense was really supposed to run like?
11) Cincinnati Bengals: Will Chad really be able to do the Ricky Bobby against this Ravens defense.
12) San Francisco 49ers: Crabtree is now has a contract and a jersey, Singletary has the team playing with a swagger, and they have the Dirty Birds coming to town.
13) Green Bay Packers: Very tough emotional loss to Favre and the Vikings, the safeties need to protect the middle of the field.
14) Chicago Bears: Cutler hasn’t looked back to his poor week one performance as he is developing a passing game with a bunch of mediocre receivers.
15) Pittsburgh Steelers: Tomlin and Co. has the team moving in the right direction once again. Mendenhall had a lot to say and also backed it up with over 150 yards on the ground.
16) Jacksonville Jaguars: David Garrard showed signs of him being a quarterback as he was great off of the play action and
17) San Diego Chargers: LT is back but the where did this rock solid defense go? I guess they are the ones that are lights out.
18) Arizona Cardinals: Warner, Boldin, and Fitz should have discussed their problems over the bye week and will now be able to get back to their high octane offense.
19) Dallas Cowboys: Romo has to develop decision making skills if he or the Cowboys will ever succeed in this league. Throwing to Champ Bailey’s side of the field twice within the final seconds of play is not a start.
20) Houston Texans: The Texans offense has to be the deciding factor as their defense has not shown up to any game this season.
21) Miami Dolphins: Chad Henne showed he can be the interim arm for the team, but a true test waits against a Jets defense to see if he can be the new face of the franchise.
22) Tennessee Titans: Can the Titans really bounce back? The offense can’t put up points and the defense seems to not have the fire and desire of yesteryear.
23) Seattle Seahawks: Hasselback may be in the line up once again, but the swagger filled Jags are coming to town.
24) Washington Redskins: Jason Campbell may have gotten a talk from the head man as both want to maintain their jobs.
25) Buffalo Bills: With Cleveland coming to town the Bills can bounce back and hopefully show that talent which was visible the first week against the Patriots.
26) Carolina Panthers: Hopefully the bye week has served the Panthers well as they have much improvement to do on the offensive and defensive side.
27) Detroit Lions: Stafford’s injury may be a minor setback, but then again what is a setback to a team that has won one game within the past year.
28) Oakland Raiders: McFadden has the tools to be successful within this league; however Russell’s play puts 8 in the box on short yardage situations.
29) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Running game cannot be all that pushes this Bucs team, one quarterback from the stable must step up.
30) Kansas City Chiefs: Continue to stumble in a division in which have many problems.
31) Cleveland Browns: Browns have been in a rebuilding state since their expansion season in 1999
32) St. Lois Rams: Stephen Jackson is the only bright spot on the Rams’ roster as they continue to pummel.

C. FOR ONCE.
3) New York Giants: With a few cupcake games coming up the Giants will be able to play their injured less and less.
4) Indianapolis Colts: Peyton Manning continues to be a true field general ripping defenses.
5) New York Jets: Mark Dirty Sanchez is playing like a season veteran behind his solid defense as he does just enough to continue winning.
6) Minnesota Vikings: Classic Brett Farve lifted the team to a 3-0 start; Childress knew exactly what he was doing when he begged for a comeback.
7) Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan will take on his Prototype this Sunday.
8) New England Patriots: The defense has to find a common ground in the linebacking corps as Brady is developing his rhythm.
9) Philadelphia Eagles: The off week will assist D-Mc in recovering as well as Michael Vick to get further involved in game plans.
10) San Diego Chargers: LT possibly returning and Rivers playing with a strong current will drive this team in Pittsburgh.
11) Denver Broncos: The most under the radar team at 3-0 and leading the AFC West.
12) Cincinnati Bengals: Palmer and Ocho are still proving their talents.
13) San Francisco 49ers: A charity game against the Rams will assist the 49ers without their leading rusher.
14) Green Bay Packers: Monday Night shall be interesting as an undefeated team lead by a Packers legend enters historic Lambeau.
15) Chicago Bears: Cutler is finding his targets with ease and Briggs is picking up the slack from missing their other Pro Bowl backer.
16) Pittsburgh Steelers: The Champs are steadily falling each week the rushing game really needs to return.
17) Tennessee Titans: The young group of wide receivers must step up to assist their aging quarterback.
18) Dallas Cowboys: Got a win in the new stadium can they prevail this week against an undefeated Broncos team
19) Arizona Cardinals: The Cards are heading south for the winter early, but I don’t think we can mark them off yet as the offense has too much talent.
20) Jacksonville Jaguars: MJD may have had a season break out game, but will this team continue to build off of the momentum or halt.
21) Houston Texans: No one knows what team will show up for game the game as their inconsistent defense is continuing to hold them down.
22) Miami Dolphins: Pennington out for the season has the Phins searching for answers. Will a duo of Chad Henne and Pat White have the Phins doing tricks again?
23) Seattle Seahawks: Is a kicker really holding this team down or is it possible they don’t have any consistency?
24) Buffalo Bills: “I DON’T KNOW SIR!” is all I can say
25) Carolina Panthers: Panthers will have to figure something out during the off week in order to play with their talent. Possibly not having Jake Delhomie as the starting QB.
26) Washington Redskins: All of the big name stars have ailing injuries and Jason Campbell will continue to be the topic of discussion.
27) Oakland Raiders: D-Russell is not showing he can become a franchise quarterback, should they have let Garcia go?
28) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Let’s see if this quarterback switch will give new life to the Bucs as they need to score because the defense can’t hold water.
29) Kansas City Chiefs: Offensive woes continue for Cassel as LJ can’t push the marker to get new downs.
30) Cleveland Browns: Possibly this season’s Detroit Lions as Mangini seems to be ruining the team already with his indecisiveness.
31) Detroit Lions: Signs already are looking brighter as they marked one in the win column.
32) St. Lois Rams: With no receivers and a Swiss cheese defense the rushing game is thee only bright spot for this team.

C. JETS as they shut down the high powered offense of the Patriots and proved they shall be the top in the division.
7) Atlanta Falcons: If the AFC wasn’t so top heavy the Falcons would be higher on the chart as they present one of the most balanced team in the NFC.
8) Pittsburgh Steelers: Last year’s champs need to find a running game fast or the clock control will hinder their defense without their Pro Bowl safety.
9) New England Patriots: Moss is no doubt one of the best receivers within the game, however when he talks it and doesn’t prove it we see what the outcome will be. Can you
10) Philadelphia Eagles: Andy Reid now has many quarterbacks in the stable; the problem is he’s starting the one with the least experience. D’Mc must gain strength to make the Eagles soar.
11) San Diego Chargers: Should definitely be placed higher in the rankings, but bad play calls within the final minutes along with a laundry list of day-to-day players caused them to slip.
12) Tennessee Titans: Chris Johnson displayed his grill as he shined through the Texans defense; however we need to see a stronger defense. I’m sure the longest tenure coach in Jeff Fisher will make key adjustments.
13) San Francisco 49ers: Is this even the same team from last year? This shows the difference a strong coach can make in the locker room as Vernon Davis is now a team captain.
14) Green Bay Packers: Rodgers to Jennings can only get the Packers so far Ryan Grant must establish himself this season to give more punch to the offense.
15) Chicago Bears: Cutler lead the team in upsetting the number one ranked Steelers, he showed his arm can pay the Bears dividend if looks to Forte in the flat.
16) Dallas Cowboys: “Jerry’s Playground” opened with a bang but the Boys couldn’t put the fire out. Romo still isn’t showing he can be an Aikman or Starbauch.
17) Arizona Cardinals: The Cards bounced back from an embarrassing performance in week one and Kurt Warner is showing his accuracy in that high powered offense.
18) Seattle Seahawks: Hasselback is injured ONCE AGAIN and putting the Seahawks in between a rock and a hard place.
19) Miami Dolphins: The Wildcat made its mark last season with Ronnie Brown darting through the defense, but the Phins can’t forget about the passing game as they have a good TE as a security blanket.
20) Houston Texans: Finally played up to the hype which will make the AFC South an intriguing race down the stretch of the season.
21) Buffalo Bills: The Bills may have played great in the first two weeks of the season as TO is beginning to show his worth, but this week will be the true test to see if they move up in rank.
22) Cincinnati Bengals: Maybe this is the season where Chad and Carson become a household name once again following three seasons of mediocre play.
23) Washington Redskins: Clinton Portis needs to bring one of his many personas to the field to put the Skins on the right track in the hard NFC East.
24) Denver Broncos: McDaniels must have known his team’s strengths prior to the season because all questioned the big Cutler trade.
25) Oakland Raiders: Do we remember the quote from last week? “Although they lost a close game they showed improvement and promise (Thus far).” Thus far was right as Russell is still struggling to consistently hit targets.
26) Jacksonville Jaguars: MJD needs to have a compliment back he cannot do it alone with a shaky passing game.
27) Carolina Panthers: With one of the best rushing duos returning from last season and an elusive Steve Smith how do they continue to struggle? Maybe because they don’t take advantage of either.
28) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: What happened to the offense we saw in week one? The Tampa 2 has also died.
29) Kansas City Chiefs: Cassel showed he can still play in this league as a starter, but without weapons from last year he will still struggle.
30) Cleveland Browns: Maybe the Browns shouldn’t go to the locker room and just do like middle school teams and meet under the goal post to maintain momentum and poise.
31) Detroit Lions: The Lions are finding and building off of some of the components which will make them successful, but they are still far from King of the Jungle.
32) St. Lois Rams: Let’s just look forward to April!

C. Hopefully LT and center Nick Hardwick can recover quickly.
6) Minnesota Vikings: Adrian Peterson displayed how he is the top running back in the league, while Percy Harvin showed off his versatility.
7) Indianapolis Colts: Jim Caldwell received his first win as the defense saved the offense in week one due to a weak rushing attack. Anthony Gonzalez’s injury could hamper the offense for the next 8 weeks.
8) Atlanta Falcons: Without a rushing attack Matt Ryan seems to be ignoring a sophomore slump as by getting connected with Tony Gonzalez.
9) Tennessee Titans: Not capitalizing on field position and turnover opportunities cost them to potentially upset the last year’s champs, but young receivers showed a lot of promise.
10) New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees continues his assault through the air in ’09 with six touchdowns, granted it was against the Lions. The defense also showed signs of improvement, but once again granted it was against the Lions.
11) Baltimore Ravens: Flacco and Co. showed a lot of diversification within their offensive scheme, while the defense still holds its tradition without Rex.
12) Green Bay Packers: The defense showed major improvements with the new scheme and pieces in place.
13) New York Jets: Rex Ryan’s demeanor has rubbed off on the Jets defense as they are taking no prisoners, and Mark Sanchez shows his worth for moving up to the number five pick.
14) Seattle Seahawks: Hasselback finally has a top target as the offense was moving on all cylinders in their new offensive set.
15) Dallas Cowboys: Roy Williams held down the Lions as a number one receiver for years and it seems when placed in the spotlight in the “Big D” he can produce.
16) Arizona Cardinals: The offense is struggling because of the loss of their coordinator, but the injuries to their second and third receivers will not help matters.
17) San Francisco 49ers: Singletary’s leadership tactics assist this team in gaining identity as well as a strong defensive backbone.
18) Chicago Bears: If Jay Cutler continues making mistakes his house may the next vandalized, (McKelvin, Buffalo). The injury to Brian Urlacher may also cause some problems within the defense.
19) Miami Dolphins: Parcells may have lifted the Dolphins to new heights , but the first week loss shows there is still some work to be done
20) Buffalo Bills: The team came out firing with underneath passes out of the no huddle, but the offense did not manage the clock enough to keep the defense rested and off the field.
21) Carolina Panthers: Jake Delhomie began the season right where he left off by continually turning the ball over.
22) Washington Redskins: Jason Campbell continues to struggle as the Redskin offense could not move the ball consistently in the most watched season opener in history.
23) Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jags defense was the biggest question mark this off season, but they held one of the most potent offenses to 14 points. The offense must create some big plays with what little receivers they have.
24) Houston Texans: With so many high hopes the Texans choked in week one, maybe they should show Dunta Robinson the $ like his shows displayed.
25) Denver Broncos: The Immaculate Deflection gave the Broncos the lead in the final ticks, but the offense still looked suspect and the defense gave up a lot of long passes.
26) Oakland Raiders: Russell found a new target in rookie Louis Murphy and also continues to use his security blanket in the big tight end Miller. Although they lost a close game they showed improvement and promise (Thus far).
27) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The offense put up large numbers with a new Cadillac in the back field; however what use to be their strong point in defense fell with Williams and Crayton posting large numbers.
28) Cincinnati Bengals: Almost doesn’t count as the team lost a close battle against the Broncos.
29) Cleveland Browns: The Browns nation met the new and improved Browns in the first half and the new and improved Browns met the old Browns in the locker room.
30) Kansas City Chiefs: The offense held its grown against one of the leagues traditional powerful defenses, but the defense did not play up to their level.
31) Detroit Lions: Any improvement from last season will look good, although Stafford did have such a pleasant day with a number of picks. He must continue to find hmmm #81 maybe!
32) St. Lois Rams: Stephen Jackson will struggle this season just as Mark Bulger because the passing attack is obsolete.

C. Within the next few weeks I will post my top ten draft board pending on prospects performance within their weekly games. Each week will count as a measuring tool to grade each prospect stock on the draft board. Here is my first week’s draft board, which will be updated with analysis next week.

1. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma (QB)

2. Eric Berry, Tennessee (S)

3. Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma (DT)

4. Taylor Mays, Southern Cal (S)

5. Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska (DT)

6. Brandon Spikes, Florida (ILB)

7. Javid Best, California (RB)

8. Russell Okung, Oklahoma State (OT)

9. Jevan Snead, Mississippi (QB)

10. Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State (WR)

C. Ohio State and Southern Cal entered the game ranked in the top ten and anticipating another BCS birth possibly one for the National Championship.

It was a must win game for the Buckeyes as they have been 0-7 against top five teams over the past few seasons. They not only represented the Buckeye nation, but also the other ten conference schools. The BIG TEN conference has been a complete joke over the past few seasons and Saturday's out of conference defeats did not help the conference return to prominence.
The Buckeyes may have controlled majority of the game and only lost by three points, but their ranking and perception has shifted them from a consistent top 10 Power House to a lower teens unstable program.

The major difference within this weekends match up was of course the COACHING! We all know Sentor Trussel as a conservative coach, well his conventional methods caused his team the game. With both teams being fairly equal in ability the intangible of the game was the coaching and Pete Carroll definitely won that battle which resulted in his team winning the war.

In a big game situation which Trussel had home field advantage and momentum, he was entirely too conservative. Instead of going for it on 4th and goal on the 3 yard line which would give his team a touchdown advantage he decided to settle and kick a field goal. On the other hand, Carroll on the first possession went for it on 4th and goal which paid dividend givng them an early lead. Carroll and the Trojans were gutsy as they were 3-4 in fourth down conversions, which were at key moments within the game.

The Buckeyes had many chances to increase the lead and put distance between the Trojans, but did not capitalize and call proper plays which would place them in managable situations. For instance, you can look at the film and tell me what second half alterations were made by both teams and which paid dividend in the end. Trussel did not take advantage of certain situations on offense nor make necessary adjustments to stop Joe McKnight within the second half.
Was I the only spectator which saw the slot lined up wide with a safety 12 yards back? Would a quick screen or bubble pass been too much to draw up on the dry erase board? Or did anyone else realize BOOM Herron got BANGED up? I didn't know a 2.4 average on 18 carries was a success.

The OSU defense played its heart out and held USC to basically 7 points if you take away that fluke interception return which resulted in a 2yrd run. Trussel relied too much on the defense to continue to hold the USC high powered offense. Regardless if a freshman quarterback was leading the charge they still have numerous athletes at each skilled position.
Where to go from here should be the question in each OSU coach, player, and fan as the loss put a large dent in the program which could cost a BCS birth and high level prospects to look towards other top tier programs for their collegiate career.

The loss also effected the perception of the Big Ten on a national level as many now view the conference with the Big East and ACC as one of the weaker BCS conferences. Even if the Buckeyes do rally and finish the season without another loss the damage has been done which will take many out of conference top 5 victories to repair.

C. Prior to the right straight to Hout's jaw, Hout ran over to Blount antagonizing and instigating confrontation by yelling in Blount's face and tapping him on the shoulder pad.

Once the skirmish was broken up by Boise coaches and Oregon players Blount was escorted off the field, but a sports fight would not be a fight until the fans were involved. Blount showed signs of Ron "Ron Ron" Artest from the 2004 Pacers versus Pistions, as he answered the Boise fans rants with hostile attitude attempting to enter the stands.

Oregon announced Friday,15 hours following the end of the game, that Blount will be suspended for the remainder of the 2009 season for his post-game altercation. Oregon took action on the incident before the Pac-10 Conference and the NCAA could take further, possibly much harsher action on the program. His single moment of stupidity may cost the Duck's their season and him an NFL career.

The Duck's will now have to rely on freshman running back LaMichael James and Keyon Barner to take the majority of the carries in Blount's absence. Within the season opener James had only two carries for 22 yards. Barner, a freshman, is listed on the roster as a corner; however under the recent circumstance coach Kelly has moved Barner to the offensive side in hopes of gaining another athletic back.

Blount, 6'2, 240 pound junior college transfer rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored a school record 17 touchdowns while splitting carries with Jeremiah Johnson and serving a 3 game suspension.

The question is was the indefinite season suspension of Blount not enough, too much or just right? Oregon took action on the situation prior to conference and NCAA regulation occurred, which was great in the public relations department, but was the punishment too excessive?

Blount was antagonized by an opposing player, one in which is not suffering similar punishment. It is understandable a punishment should have been served to Blount, however the suspension was quickly issued and extremely severe. Oregon should have taken action stating an indefinite suspension which would not set forth a certain amount of games.

Yes Blount should be accountable for his actions and punished to an extent, however the WAC and NCAA should have also taken action on Byron Hout since BSU has failed to issue an acceptable punishment. Blount's collegiate career is now over because of the instigation of Hout.

Friday Blount did issue an apology for his actions, but it was 15 hours too late as the damage to the school, athletic department, the team, and himself was already done. The damage which has caused Blount to fall from an early second round selection to possibly a UFL character case.

C. What teams were the biggest winners during the off season? Buffalo with T.O? Chicago with Jay Cutler?

The ranking may surprise you, as offseason transactions are analyzed to depict which teams had the biggest upgrade?

1. Philadelphia Eagles: A
Through major trades, the draft and free agent acquisitions the Eagles were able to upgrade many positions. In a trade with Buffalo the Eagles acquired Jason Peters who is one of the most talented young offensive tackle in the league. Peters will protect McNabb’s blind side with his long arms and quick feet.

Within another trade the Eagles gained another solid corner from New England in Ellis Hobbs. Hobbs has the ability to cover many of the talented receivers within the league as he has elite speed and he is also an above average kick returner.

Stacey Andrews was also added to the offensive line, via free agency, to pair with his brother Shawn at offensive guard. The Eagles may have lost one of their most dominant defensive players in safety Brian Dawkins, but the acquisition of Sean Jones in free agency gives the secondary youth and another solid tackler.

The draft brought three talented skill position players in Jeremy Maclin, LeSean McCoy, and Cornelius Ingram. Maclin will bring athleticism and speed to the receiving corps as well as kick return ability. While McCoy brings youth to the backfield and will relieve Brian Westbrook at times trading off on carries and also used as a back that can get to the outside. Although Ingram is injured he has a lot of potential to become a great receiving tight end.

Finally, let us not forget about the most controversial signing of the off season in Michael Vick. Although Vick may bring a lot of baggage to the locker room he also brings excitement, versatility, and a strong arm. Vick can be used as a wildcat option alongside of McNabb.

2. New York Jets: A
First of all, Woody Johnson and Co. did a great job in selecting Rex Ryan as the new head coach. Ryan was the mastermind behind one of the best defenses year in and year out with the Baltimore Ravens. Ryan will implement his defensive blitz schemes to a team which was ranked in the middle of the pack last season.

Ryan then went and brought a few of his pieces from Baltimore with Bart Scott, Marques Douglas and Jim Leonard. Scott and Leonard will bring veteran leadership and run stopping ability to an already good defensive group.

Through a trade with the Eagles receiving Lito Sheppard, the Jets were able to upgrade their secondary which faced problems against the pass as they finished 29th in the league.

Trading up within the draft caused the Jets to get better in an addition through subtraction sense as they sent a few role players to the Browns in exchange for the 5th overall pick in which they got a future franchise quarterback. Within the third round they also got a good inside runner in Shaun Greene. If those selections pan out then they could have a near perfect off season.

3. New England Patriots: A-
The Patriots’ front office continued their tradition with their stock market management style, buying low and selling high. The Patriots may have lost many vital parts of their team but re-uped gaining more veteran experience and draft picks.
The Patriots struggled last season against the pass, this must have set off alarms as they addressed the problem substantially in the off season acquiring Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden in free agency and Darius Butler and Patrick Chung within the draft.

The offense also gained veteran running back Fred Taylor, wide receiver Joey Galloway, and tight ends Alex Smith and Chris Baker who can all be major contributors to an already high quality offense. Taylor will bring more consistency to a backfield which was a complete let down last season. While Smith and Baker will upgrade the group of tight ends which contributed less than 300 yards and two touchdowns last season. Galloway will bring more speed to a deep receiving corps and may revitalize his long career.

Through a trade with the Eagles the Patriots also gained another receiving option for Brady in Greg Lewis.

4. Chicago Bears: B+
For years the Bears have been missing the most vital piece to their team in a big time quarterback. The question mark at quarterback is now resolved through a trade which sent Jay Culter to the Bears.

The Bears also signed former All-Pro OT Orlando Pace off of waivers; if Pace can stay healthy the offensive line will have a major face lift. The signing of Josh Bullocks will give the Bears an option to replace Mike Brown.

The Bears drafted Juaquin Iglesias, a fundamentally sound receiver who can run smooth routes and present Cutler with an open target. Jarron Gilbert, an athletic defensive end, was also drafted which can learn and gain experience behind veteran Adewale Ogunley.

5. Houston Texans: B
Following last season the Texans needed a lot of defensive help as they were middle class in every defensive category. Through strategic free agent signings and draft picks the Texans upgraded their defense.
Antonio Smith will take off a lot of pressure off of Mario Williams as he has great pass rushing ability, while defensive tackle Shaun Cody will bulk up the middle of defense assisting in the defending the run. Second round draft choice Connor Barwin will bring plenty of versatility to the line as well as he possesses unique athletic ability.

The position group which received the most attention was the linebacking corps. Brian Cushing should bring solid playmaking ability teaming up with DeMeco Ryans. The Texans also signed Cato June and Buster Davis, June will add coverage while Davis will add blitzing and run stopping skills.

Honorable Mentions:
Buffalo Bills: B
Key new arrival: (WR) Terrell Owens, (DE/OLB) Aaron Maybin, (OL) Eric Woods, © Geoff Hangarterner and (RB) Dominique Rhodes

Not only did they gain a play making receiver, but revamped the line through the draft and free agency.

Kansas City Chiefs: B
Key New arrival: (QB) Matt Cassel, (LB) Mike Vrabel, and (DE) Tyson Jackson

If Cassel can show the same talent as last season Scott Pioli packed a solid starting quarterback and a veteran linebacker for his Kansas City move.

Washington Redskins: B
Key new arrivals: (DT) Albert Haynesworth, (DE) Brian Orakpo, (P) Hunter Smith

The Redskins gained a heavy duty run stopper in Haynesworth through free agency and also an outside pass rusher in the draft with Orakpo.

St. Louis Rams: B
Key new arrivals: (OT) Jason Smith, (LB) James Laurinaitis, (OT) Jason Brown, and (S) James Butler

Following a lackluster offensive season the Rams upgraded their offensive line to hopefully aiding Stephen Jackson on the rush.

Seattle Seahawks: B-
Key new arrival: (WR) T.J. Houshmandzadeh, (DT) Cory Redding, (DT) Collin Cole, and (CB) Ken Lucas
After several disappointing wide receiver signings the Seahawks finally landed their bird with Houshmandzadeh, and also added bulk to the middle of their defensive line.

C. If Jake Delhomme can gather his ability from the 2004 season and if young defenders Everette Brown, Charles Godfrey, and Richard Marshall come together and develop into the system the Carolina Panthers have a chance to win the NFC South or at least become a Wild Card team.

Quarterbacks: Last year coming off of Tommy John surgery, Jake Delhomme had a season full of highs and lows. Within the NFC Divisional game Delhomme threw six interceptions which led to the Panthers defeat against the Cardinals.

Although Delhomme had a lack luster performance the Panthers did not make any moves to replace him as he is the best quarterback on the roster. In the past Delhomme possessed the ability to lead the team when the run game failed. This season he must depend on a steady run game to open up the field for his arm.

There is not a steady back up behind Delhomme as Matt Moore and Josh McCown will battle for the top back up slot. Moore doesn’t have the experience like McCown; however he has been in the Panthers’ system and may have a slight advantage talent wise. (7.8)

Running backs: The Panthers have bought into the recent trend of an offense consisting of two thoroughbred running backs. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart combined their talents and set league records.

The combo can improve on those record numbers as Stewart has had an offseason to familiarize himself with the system. Williams has great instincts/vision and is also one of the quickest backs which can run between the tackles, while Stewart uses his bowling ball running style to get to the second level. Behind a zone blocking line and a great lead blocking full back in Brad Hoover, Williams and Stewart should continue their success.
The Panthers also added two more pieces to their running game full back Tony Fiammetta and running back Mike Goodson. Fiammetta will most likely be groomed for Hoover’s position and Goodson brings versatility as an outside runner and out of the backfield receiver. (9.7)

Wide Receivers: Steve Smith leads a group of receivers which has experience and youth. Smith is arguably one of the most talented receivers in the league as he has elite speed to beat coverage deep downfield.

Veteran Muhsin Muhammad not only runs solid crisp routes and gives Delhomme a large target, but he takes pressure off of Smith. Smith and Muhammad combined for almost 2,500 yards last season.

If Delhomme can be consistent throughout the season the duo will once again have another impressive season. Dwayne Jarrett offers a solid third receiving option because of his good hands, and tight end Jeff King is a good inline blocker for the run game and can also give Delhomme another big target for third down plays. (8.6)

Offensive Line: Through the zone blocking schemes the Panthers offensive line may not be one of the most talented units on the team but is one of the most important. Pro Bowl LT Jordan Gross returns as a cornerstone to the unit and RT Jeff Otah will assist Gross in opening up lanes for the two iron horse running backs. Keydrick Vincent and Travelle Wharton will be influential in pieces within the offense because of their good run blocking technique.

The Panthers may have a good starting five offensive line, but the depth of the unit is limited because of the loss of Geoff Hangartner, Jeremy Bridges, and Frank Omiyale via free agency. Last year the Panthers spent two seven round draft picks on are Geoff Schwartz and Mackenzy Bernadeau; both will be the top backups this season.

The group’s losses were key contributors to last years’ successful run game. Therefore in order for the offense to succeed the starters must maintain their health. (8.7)

Defensive Line: Julius Peppers has been a consistent Pro Bowl pass rusher, last season he had 14.5 sacks. Outside of Peppers the team’s pass rush was vacant, therefore they moved up in the draft to get stud defensive end Everette Brown. The deal may have cost their first round selection of 2010, but Brown although undersized has the speed and quickness to get around many OT in the league.

Maake Kemoetu has a large frame and though not a great pass rusher he will plug the middle against the run. Damione Lewis will start at the other DT as the weakest of the d-line; if he can polish his technique and come off of off season surgery he may serve his role and assist off of Kemoetu’s double team blocks.

Darwin Walker and Tyler Brayton will have their roles reduced this season, but give the unit solid back-ups. The success of the unit will depend on the development of Everette Brown as an NFL pass rusher. (7.9)

Linebackers: Led by middle Linebacker Jon Beason, the linebacking corps is the defensive unit which contains the most dept. Beason has the athletic ability which allows him to play from sideline to sideline and aggressively delivering a strong blow.

Thomas Davis and Na’il Diggs partner with Beason with similar athletic traits and great tackling skills. Though Diggs is entering his 10th season he is an experienced backer which can assist in developing the younger backups. Davis can cause many impact plays such as sacks and turnovers.

Landon Johnson is the most quality backup on the roster; however Donte Curry, Dan Conner and James Anderson can all be used in multiple sub-packages. (9.1)

Defensive Backs: Last season the secondary was average ranking 21st in interceptions partly because of the inexperience as Chris Gamble and Ken Lucas brought the most experience with a combined 14 seasons. Lucas left the team via free agency leaving Gamble the reigns in leadership and experience. Gamble has great speed and led the team in tackles last season, but still gives up many big plays to the opposition.

Chris Harris will start with Charles Godfrey at the safety position, both are talented young safeties but have room for improvement. Harris uses his aggressiveness to deliver punishing blows to ball carriers and as a rookie Godfey turned in many impressive performances.

Richard Marshall last season’s nickel back will take the place of Ken Lucas opposite of Chris Gamble. Second round selection Sherrod Martin of Troy will take over at Marshall’s nickel back position, however if Martin struggles C.J. Wilson or Dante Wesley could take over his duties. (8.2)

Special Teams: Placekicker John Kasay and kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd return to the team as Kasay only missed one field goal last season inside of 50 yards, and Lloyd had 30 touchbacks setting an NFL record. These two pieces are vital in scoring and field position and will assist the team greatly.

The down of this unit is in the return game which Mark Jones was loss to the Titans via free agency. Ryne Robinson will likely take Jones position which is not a total decrease in skill because of his agility. (8.3)

C. The acquisition of Terrell Owens upgraded the receiving corps and offense as a hole, but the Bills still have a young defense which ranked mid-level in the league.

The Bills rebuilt an offensive line and answered some of the lingering questions within the defensive backfield through free agent signing and drafting three corners. Hopefully Posluszny and Mitchell can make enough plays at linebacker to relieve the secondary, while Owens assists Edwards in the first three games as Marshawn Lynch serves his suspension.

Quarterbacks: Entering his third in the NFL and second as a starter, Trent Edwards began his reign with four consecutive wins and having two-hundred plus passing yards in all but one of the games.

Edwards has ideal size for a pro-style quarterback, and he also possesses many of the intangible goods to assist him in competing at a phenomenal level. However, Edwards must develop some consistency as throughout the ’08 season his performance had an equal amount of lows for the highs.

With the signing of Terrell Owens the Bills receiver corps has upgraded from average to loaded, and if Edwards shows his intangible talents then he should have the best season of his young career. (8.0)

Running backs: Once the Bills realized Marshawn Lynch will be M.I.A for the first three games due to a suspension, they signed Dominique Rhodes in free agency and Fred Jackson to a four year contract extension. The two backs should assist the running game to hold its course until Lynch can return in week four in Miami.

Though Jackson will run with a bowling ball technique gaining tough yards, with his return Lynch will bring a versatile aspect to the game as he can be used within the passing game and also break runs to the outside. With the addition of Rhodes and Jackson’s contract extension the Bills backfield has upgraded through depth. (8.6)

Wide Receivers: Everyone always looks at Terrell Owens as a controversial player, one that breaks teams down instead of lifting them up. The arrival of T.O has already lifted a lingering passing game to the next level as his talent to make plays is almost comparable to his media attention.

Owens talent can open up many options for the Bills, such as causing a double team leaving Evans or the speedy Roscoe Parrish open. The Bills will be able to open up the passing game by spreading the field in four wide sets giving Edwards easy targets to hit. (9.1)

Offensive Line: This position unit is only returning two starters (Langston Walker and Brad Butler) due to the trade of Jason Peters to the Eagles. Walker will most likely take over Peters’ position at left tackle while Butler may move to right tackle.

The Bills added Geoff Hangartner from the Panthers through free agency who will take over the duties at center and second round draft selections Eric Woods and Andy Levitre will both change positions within the NFL to assist the team at guard.

Overall, the loss of Peters has decreased the talent and experience of the offensive line causing four out of the five positions to be filled with players who last season played a different position. (7.4)
Defensive Line: This unit has vague potential to develop into an integral part of the Bills roster. The potential rests upon various intangibles such as Marcus Stroud’s performance and the ability to Aaron Schobel to rebound from last season’s injury.

The Bills also used their first pick on DE Aaron Maybin which could either play down or stand up and be a rush linebacker. If Maybin does not progress as a down lineman Kyle Williams and other valued back-ups can assist opposite of Schobel. (7.9)

Linebackers: The linebacking corps will be directed by Kawika Mitchell and third year middle linebacker Paul Posluszny. Posluszny has the intensity and run stopping ability to be a future franchise linebacker.

Keith Ellison name is in pencil on the depth chart at the strong side of the linebacking corps, as there will be competition within training camp and preseason to determine if he can solidify himself as a starter. Ellison must gain consistency and become a better zone coverage backer.

Mitchell will make his veteran presence felt as he will continue to make game changing plays and lead the younger players. (8.7)

Defensive Backs: The Bills were 27th in interceptions last season and mid-level against the pass. Competition at corner and safety with a few quality players should change the aggressiveness and playmaking ability of the Bills defensive backfield.

Bills acquired Drayton Florence through free agency and also drafted three corners to push the Macs (Terrence McGee and Leodis McKelvin). Both of the Macs have the ability to make plays on the ball and gain return yardage.

At safety the Bills have a solid playmaker in Donte Whitner the question is who will line up next to him. Bryan Scott can bring more run support while Ko Simpson can cover the deep half more efficiently. (8.4)

Special Teams: The Bills have one of the best return games within the NFL as they finished 1st in punt returns and 7th in kick returns. With Roscoe Parrish returning punts the Bills can get good field position which can assist Edwards and place kicker Rian Lindell. (9.3)

C. Can a new defensive coordinator and revamped secondary be the answer?
Within the offseason the Ravens made great acquisitions upgrading the secondary, however failed to upgrade the receiving corps. With an absent down the field receiver, and new additions to the defense it still remains to be seen if the Ravens can shake the Steelers’ grasp to win the division.
Quarterbacks: Within his rookie season Joe Flacco proved his worth, as he assisted in leading the Ravens to the AFC Championship Game. Flacco has all of the notable attributes of an NFL quarterback: the size, a strong arm, and can move well within the pocket. If Flacco can gather the other intangibles such as reading the coverage and blitz schemes he can decrease mistakes and open the passing game.
Troy Smith can also be used more because of his versatility as the wildcat offense is becoming more prevalent within NFL playbooks. (8.4)
Running backs: Last season the Raven’s backfield underwent shuffling each week with a three-man rotation, as Le’Ron McClain and Ray Rice both emerged assisting veteran Willis McGahee. This season McClain can continue to bring a hard nose, smash-mouth running style to the offense. Rice brought quickness and the ability to find holes and bounce the run outside.
However, with the drafting of Virginia’s Cedric Peerman McClain may go back to his natural position of fullback and Willis McGahee may see less time within the rotation. Peerman’s speed and ability to be a receiving threat gives the Ravens’ offense more versatility. (9.1)
Wide Receivers: Although Flacco is making strives to become a more potent threat the Ravens did not assist him in his objective as they did not address the problems within the receiving corps. Outside of veteran Derrick Mason, who was wooed out of retirement, the Ravens lack a dominant receiver. Between Todd Heap falling in production and Demetrius Williams’ slow development, the Ravens must depend on Mark Clayton to be the second option in the passing game. Once Williams fully develops he can be a good fit as he possesses the elite speed for Flacco to throw down field. (7.7)
Offensive Line: First round selection Michael Oher and free agent acquisition Matt Birk supplied an instant upgrade to the O-line. Oher will step into the line-up immediately at right tackle while Jared Gaither will continue to hold down Flacco’s blind side at left tackle. The Ravens are hoping to capitalize on the youthful talents of both Oher and Gaither to impede the quality pass rushers which they will throughout their 2009 schedule. (8.8)
Defensive Line: Haloti Ngata anchors this position group, as one of the premier defensive linemen in the league. Because of his size and athleticism Ngata brings extreme tenacity each play and causes confusion on the offensive front.
Outside of Ngata the Ravens face question marks at the other positions as Trevor Pryce is aging and Kelly Gregg is coming off of a knee injury. If Gregg can be the once dominate run stopper of the 2007 season he and Ngata can equal many tackles for losses. (8.3)
Linebackers: In the past the Ravens’ linebacking corps has been the best in the league, but with an aging Ray Lewis and a missing Bart Scott can the group continue to make the plays of yester year? The corps success depends on if Tavares Gooden can step in and replace Scott as a role player while Jarret Johnson maintains his above average performance.
As Terrell Suggs is already a phenomenal linebacker with elite athletic ability, but if his new contract can boost his performance and cause him to compete on a dominant level the Ravens puzzle to success is complete. (9.0)
Defensive Back: During the off season the secondary underwent an overhaul at corner as Chris McAlister was released, and Domonique Foxworth and Chris Carr were signed as replacements. Fabian Washington and Foxworth are the projected starters, which is an upgrade in man-to-man coverage; while Samari Rolle and rookie Lardarius Webb will be used within the nickel and dime packages. Although with one of the best and most feared safeties in the league at the centerfield position in Ed Reed many quarterbacks may hesitate before each pass. (8.8)
Special Teams: Kick returner and kicker are both positions which are not set in ink as the Ravens were among the bottom tier in kick return and kicker Matt Stover retired. Most likely the strong leg, undrafted free agent Grahm Gano will take over kicking duties. (7.4)

C. The Falcons realized their weakness on the defense as general manager Thomas Dimitroff and company used all of their draft picks on defensive players. If Michael Turner can remain a steady force and if Matt Ryan can continue grow with Roddy White the Falcons will have a prosperous offensive set.
Quarterback: Matt Ryan must follow a tremendous break out rookie season in hopes of not catching a sophomore slump. Although Ryan’s arm lost the heat within the final few games of the season he still displayed he has the tools to be a successful passer within the NFL. Within Ryan’s performances last season he displayed he can accurately throw, move within the pocket, and maintain the pressure of a fourth quarter comeback. If he can maintain his consistency from beginning to end the Ryan and the Falcons can find themselves within the playoffs for a second consecutive season, if not the Falcons have a back-up in Chris Redman who may be able to do enough just to get by within the open NFC South. (8.6)
Running backs: With a duel powered backfield in Michael “the Burner” Turner and Jarious Norwood the running back position is possibly the top position unit on the team. Last season Turner displayed his tools as a starting running back as he ran for over 1,600 yards and 17 touchdowns. Turner has the ability to not only break tackles after the initial hit, but he can also catch the ball out of the backfield. Norwood provides the Falcon’s with a good change of pace runner as his speed and agility can create long runs. (9.5)
Wide Receivers: Led by Pro Bowler Rody White, who had over 1300 yards and 7 touchdowns last season, the Falcons receivers are attempting to once again capitalize from a unique season. White’s speed and ability to get open in coverage has caused him to progress to one of the most underrated receivers within the league. Michael Jenkins’ speed and Brian Finneran’s sure hands and lanky frame also can provide for good targets once again for Ryan. Harry Douglas speed and versatility will definitely be missed due to him being placed on IR and out for the season because of his torn ACL. The final piece of the Falcons’ receiving corps was established through a trade in which one of the best tight ends of all time, Tony Gonzalez, was sent to the Falcons in exchange for a 2010 second round draft pick. (8.3)
Offensive Line: With major improvements in pass protection and the running game the Falcons have developed a solid offensive line behind the coaching of Paul Boudreau. The o-line proved themselves as they opened up gaping holes for Turner and lowered the sack total from 2007. Veteran center Todd McClure is the base of this line as his agility provides for versatile blocking schemes. There are no other standout performers; however, if Boudreau can continue to work with the other components the Falcons can continue last year’s success. (7.6)
Defensive Line: The Falcons defensive line continues to be a building piece. Although veteran end John Abraham is showing strides within the off season to get back to his peak the Falcons still have some room for improvement. Jamal Anderson will be entering his third season and can be a versatile piece to the scattered puzzle. Anderson has the ability to move inside on passing downs and cause the pocket to collapse assisting Abraham and Chauncey Davis off the edge. The run defense should be more controllable as 6’2, 299 lb Peria Jerry was the first round selection. Jerry’s strength and quickness off the snap can plug the gaps and cause possible double teams. (7.8)
Linebackers: Following the season the Falcons made a complete revamp of the linebacking corps as they released longtime middle backer Keith Brooking and Michael Boley. With the signing of veteran free agent Mike Peterson the Falcons have upgraded the linebacking corps bringing experience and a strong presence against the run. Second year linebacker and former Sooner standout Curtis Lofton should have a productive season as his athleticism will be used in blitzes and pass coverage. (7.8)
Defensive Backs: With Erick Coleman returning to the line-up this season following his 95 tackle performance a year ago the falcons have at least one candidate to build off of. The other safety is still up in the air between Eric Brock, Thomas DeCoud, and ’09 second round draftee William Moore. DeCoud seems to be the most likely candidate for the position as he has explosion on the hit and athleticism to cover deep routes. Chris Houston should earn one of the cornerback spots while David Irons, Chevis Jackson, and Chris Owens will battle for the opposite slot. (7.2)
Special Teams: Running back Jarious Norwood will once again return kicks as last season the Falcons ranked within the top ten in the league. Kicker Jason Elam will bring his golden leg back to kick pressure game winning field goals while franchise tagged punter Michael Koenen will bring precision to the punting game. Koenen used accuracy and touch to drop 25 punts inside the 20 yard line last season which gives the offense a 10% chance to score. (9.3)

C. New defensive coordinator Bill Davis plans to implement more of the 3-4 schemes to a defense which struggled both on stopping the run and consistently providing a pass rush. The Cardinals drafted according to their needs as with the first two selections running back Chris Wells and tweener DE-OLB Cody Brown can assist the team immediately with their skill sets. Overall, the Cardinals improved in many areas and can possibly recreate their 2008 Super Bowl run.

Quarterbacks: Under the veteran play and leadership of Kurt Warner the air-attack of the Cardinals will be prevalent once again. Warner brings accuracy and situational leadership to the team. Although Matt Leinart has been waiting for three seasons to prove himself within the professional ranks he does not possess the intangible dynamics in which Warner harnesses. Look for Warner to continue to break down the deep cover two and three defenses and also find his mismatch within the one-on-one coverage. (9.1)

Running backs: Through the selection of Chris “Beanie” Wells the Cardinals added another strong inside running back. Throughout college wells was hindered with injuries which hampered his supposed Heisman junior year performance. With a 6’1, 235 lbs frame wells possess the size and also the quickness which could cause for defenses to not go with too many nickel and dime packages for the pass. Breakout rookie Tim Hightower also returns to the line-up which could assist Wells in staying healthy throughout the season. The addition of free agent Jason Wright and seventh round draft pick LaRod Stephens-Howling will also give the Cardinals outside running options and out of the backfield receiving options. (7.9)

Wide Receivers: This is by far one of the most dominant position groups on the team and one of the top in the league. With all of the contract and trade talks Anquan Boldin still appeared on time to training camp which was a blessing to Warner. Last season Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, and Steve Breaston each surpassed the 1,000 yard receiving mark. Fitzgerald is already in discussion as one of the top receivers within the league, while Boldin’s size and athleticism gives him a unique skill set used in numerous ways by the Cardinals. Breaston has developed into a great third option receiver along with Jerheme Urban and Early Doucet holding down the four and five spot respectfully. Once tight-ends Leonard Pope and Ben Patrick are added to the mix the Cardinal receiving corps is amongst the top in the NFL. (9.9)

Offensive Line: One of the most under-appreciated position groups on many teams, the Cardinal Offensive line did a good job last season protecting Warner from the pass rush and making holes when necessary for the running game. Warner was seldom sacked last season and the offensive line pushed the pile specifically in short yardage and goaline situations for Hightower. Levi Brown proved his worth as his 6’5, 322 lbs frame was solid both in the pass protection and the rushing game. Although the Cardinals’ offensive line has showed significant progress of improvement throughout the years they must still become more dominant in opening up running lanes for a young backfield. (8.1)

Defensive Line: The Cardinals defensive line is one which lacks the physical ability to continually prosper throughout a sixteen game season. Outside of Darnell Dockett the Cardinals have veteran leadership within the position unit, but lack athletic ability, size, and are injury prone. With Antonio Smith leaving for the Texans ends Bryan Robinson and Bertrand Berry must stay healthy and stand their ground in the new 3-4 defense for the Cardinals specifically against the run. If Darnell Dockett continues to be a force both against the run and pass teams will need to game plan around him which could lead for Robinson, Berry, and some of the backers to have big years. (7.4)

Linebackers: The Cardinals struggled against the run last season, partly because of the smaller defensive line; however the lack of sack production could be blamed on the linebackers. Karlos Dansby was used successfully on the blitz as his force caused confusion on the run, which assisted fellow backer Gerald Hayes in causing fumbles. With the lack in pass rush and the Cardinals mixing in a 3-4 scheme the selection of tweener DE-OLB Cody Brown of Connecticut could produce more pass rush off of the edge with Chike Okeafor. (8.3)

Defensive Backs: Last year’s defensive standout Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie provided great pass coverage as his top-end speed is unique and can be used to keep up with elite receivers on deep routes. Through wise free agency management the Cardinals were able to release Rod Hood and gain some youth and more ability with Bryant McFadden from the Steelers. The backbone of the secondary Pro Bowler, Adrian Wilson returns as he possesses a unique skill set. Wilson can provide run support, sufficient pass coverage and can also blitz/rush the quarterback. Antrel Rolle also has the ability to provide decent run support and with his field vision he has the ability cause turnovers in the pass game. Overall, the Cardinals secondary has improved tremendously and with the leadership of Wilson and athleticism of Rolle and Rodgers-Cromartie they have a chance to cause numerous turnovers throughout the season. (8.7)

Special Teams: The Cardinals have one of the most accurate kickers within the league in Neil Rackers, but do not have a long distant punter in Ben Graham. The Cardinals’ offensive must play off Graham’s strength in providing enough spin and touch on the ball to land inside the 20. If the offense and defense can control the field position the team can capitalize off of Graham’s precision. Last season J.J Arrington handled most of the team’s returns, but with Arrington leaving via free agency the Cardinals must fill the hole with another speedy, agile, player. The duties could transfer to the third receiver Steve Breston, safety Antrel Rolle, or another athlete during the preseason. (7.6)

C. Although they may have loss a piece of their three headed monster running game and a dominant receiver, the Manning must just manage the clock for a successful season.
2. Philadelphia Eagles: With major addition through subtraction within free agency, trades and the draft during the off season the Eagles made key improvements to the defense and the offense as Jeremy Macklin will multiply the quickness of Deshawn Jackson, leaving the Giants as their conference roadblock.
3. Washington Redskins: Many doubt the talent of Jason Campbell believing there is a quarterback problem in the nation’s capital. However, with the addition of Albert Haynesworth and other defensive weapons the Skins have the offensive power to be competitive within the division.
4. Dallas Cowboys: The “Big D” may have dismissed and released character issues such as T.O. and Gregg Ellis from their club house, but unless Marion Barber and a healthy Felix Jones can assist Tony Romo in pushing the offense the Cowboys will be left without any popcorn popping.

NFC North
1. Green Bay Packers: With the new talented pieces added to go with installed 3-4 defensive scheme the Packers improve substantially from ’08. Last season Aaron Rodgers showed he could be an above average quarterback producing good stats, look for him to sling the ball more against a mediocre schedule.
2. Minnesota Vikings: Although the Vikings already have a quarterback competition brewing between Jackson and Rosenfels, the fate of the Vikings could depend on an undecided Brett Farve. But look for the strong running game lead by Adrian Peterson and a solid defense to continue to be the anchor of the Viking team.
3. Chicago Bears: Jay Cutler already is bringing a lost dimension of the offense to Chicago in a passing game, but the question is who will be the key to catching the long bomb of Cutler? Also the dominant Bears defense of the past must emerge in order to give the Bears a remote chance.
4. Detroit Lions: The Lions will finally get some wins with the accurate passing of Matt Stafford and acrobatic receiving ability of Calvin Johnson. The Lions’ defense will still be a growing concern for as there are little dominant pieces.

NFC South
1. Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons obviously believed the rumors of a weak defense as all of their draft picks went to the X side of the ball. Michael “the Burner” Turner and Jerious Norwood will assist Matt Ryan in his second season in winning the division once again.
2. New Orleans Saints: With Reggie Bush coming off of injury Pierre Thomas must assist Drew Brews in outscoring the opposition, because the Saints defense is still lacking in the ability to make big plays.
3. Carolina Panthers: The main factor for the Panthers success is if Jake Delhomme can throw to the team wearing the correct jersey. The two headed backfield of Williams and Stuart will make stellar plays, and the improved defense can make for an interesting finish for the season.
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Raheem Morris seems to have learned from Jon Gruden, as Morris is collecting quarterbacks within his stable. Until the starting QB situation is resolved the Buccaneers are in for another long season.

NFC West
1. Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals passing game is too potent for any team within the NFC West to compete, not to mention they added an inside running back in Beanie Wells and the defensive should improve from their conference championship state.
2. Seattle Seahawks: If Matt Hasselbeck can stay healthy throughout the season the new addition of T.J. Houshmanzadeh can reap the benefits. The Seahawks must improve their running game and their defense, rookie linebacker Aaron Curry can definitely assist in the later.
3. San Francisco 49ers: Under the military discipline role of Mike Singletary the team can gain a winning hunger and attitude. Under the veteran leadership of Isaac Bruce rookie Michael Crabtree could bring a dynamic piece to the passing game.
4. St. Louis Rams: The offensive line did improve but both sides of the ball have too many holes. Stephen Jackson will have to lead the offense down the field as this looks to be Marc Bulger’s final season under center in the STL.

C. However, the pieces are not as complete as the Patriots formulated offense.
3. New York Jets: With Rex Ryan now at the helm to guide new Jets acquisitions Bart Scott, Lito Sheppard, and a solid returning defensive group the J-E-T-S “JETS” can make some noise. That is if their quarterback situation is solidified before the start of the season.
4. Buffalo Bills: Although T.O. is bringing a unique flavor of hot sauce for the wings in Buffalo, there isn’t enough to apply to the team to assist the young defense and second year starting quarterback Trent Edwards.
AFC North
1. Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers will be dominant once again following their Super Bowl victory as they have one of the easiest schedules in the league and return one of the best defenses and receiving corps. Also with Rashad Mendenhall coming back from injury the Steelers can run to the AFC North title.
2. Baltimore Ravens: Although the Ravens showed a great sign in the 2008 season Joe Flacco now is missing his leading receiver, Derek Mason, because of rumors of “retirement.” Flacco may have the support of a vicious defense, but a weak offense and the Pittsburgh Steelers are well-built a road block.
3. Cincinnati Bengals: Carson Palmer returning to action from his 2008 injury plagued season is a positive sign, so is new speedy receiver Laveranues Coles, but the lack of defensive support could cause for an unsuccessful season for the Bengals.
4. Cleveland Browns: The Browns have many areas of concern beginning with a quarterback controversy; should it be the former All-Pro gun slinger Derek Andersen or the fan favorite “Golden Boy” Brady Quinn. Although quarterback is a major concern the lack of a strong defense will cause high scoring games for the opposition.
AFC South
1. Tennessee Titans: Kerry Collins will once again lead a balanced two-headed running game to the post season, but the loss of such a dominant defensive tackle in Albert Haynesworth will cause running lanes to open up in the defense. Fisher will have to devise great clock control game plans to be overly successful.
2. Indianapolis Colts: The Colts will continue their double digit win season streak as Peyton Manning’s knowledge of the game will assist in making audibles to the rejuvenated back field of Joseph Addai, Michael Hart, and Donald Brown.
3. Houston Texans: The Texans have finished at .500 for the past two straight seasons. This year’s determinant rests on the arm of Matt Schwab and the legs of Steve Slaton as the Texans have the skills and talent to compete within the conference.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Major upgrades to the offensive line have occurred through the draft and free agency, however the lack of a potent receiving corps will cause for a long season for the Jags.
AFC West
1. San Diego Chargers: L.T. and Rivers will lead the rest of the Chargers talent to another AFC West title, not to mention the return of a healthy “Lights Out” Shawn Merriman will give more pressure off the edge pressure to disrupt the quarterback.
2. Kansas City Chiefs: Scott Pioli was able to bring a gift wrapped package of Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel to the Chiefs. They will give the Chiefs less stress concerning need areas, however the defense and receiving corps is still a growing concern.
3. Oakland Raiders: Although the Raiders have been one of the laughing stocks of the NFL for the past few seasons, they will show signs of improvement as JaMarcus Russell and a strong rushing attack will assist them in overcoming some adversity.
4. Denver Broncos: The loss of Jay Cutler and the rants of trade from Brandon Marshall will cause for less offensive production. Kyle Orton may be a mid level quarterback, but his talent will not lead be able to lead a team with an inefficient defense.

C.
